The Weng Chun Kung Fu Academy in London was founded in 2008 by Bruce Cat. The London Academy is part of the International Weng Chun Kung Fu Association. Our aim is to elevate Weng Chun Kung Fu to its next evolutionary level.
Students of the London Weng Chun Kung Fu Academy are all very different, ranging from people who have no previous martial art training to the discerning martial artist, coming from martial arts backgrounds like Karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Hung Gar, MMA, Jiujitsu and other Wing Chun styles. Our students do share similarities, most notably a dedication to learning an effective self defence system in a no ego and friendly environment.

Weng Chun “Eternal Spring” is not to be confused with the popular Yip Man Wing Chun “Beautiful Spring”, though some techniques look similar on the surface, but the concepts are very different.

This ancient Chinese martial art combines one of the most effective fighting systems with philosophical wisdom and physical health aspects.

Weng Chun Kung Fu emphasis on simplicity and directness was in sharp contrast to the acrobatic styles taught outside the Shaolin hall. Weng Chun Kung Fu was developed to counter all different types of Kung Fu that were used by the many different armies at the time. Common soldiers had to be trained quickly to counter specific threats by using specific modules of the system rather than the complete system itself. The creation of this new system focused on optimising human physiological and bio-mechanical expression in combat. It is a truly sophisticated Chinese martial Arts which appeals to men and women of all ages.

In traditional Weng Chun Kung Fu teaching, weapons were taught first and empty hands teaching were then followed. In modern days teaching, the empty hands and weapons are taught side by side. Weng Chun Kung Fu practitioners called the pole their teacher and the butterfly knives their parents.

Weng Chun Kung Fu is a complete system that based its training system on Chan teachings and training methods on Chan philosophy. It trains the students to fight in all phases of combat (kicks, strike, locks, clinch, throws and ground fighting) in addition to long and short weapons within a complete set of strategies and tactics. It uses the center line concept and the concept of heaven, man and earth (time, space, energetic) orientation to map out the ranges of attack and defence. The aim is to win in the shortest possible time when a physical confrontation becomes inevitable. Weng Chun doesn’t fight force with force, but it uses an opponent’s force to its advantage, so size, build, gender and aggression will not determine the outcome.

Weng Chun Kung Fu represents the culmination of Shaolin Chan learned through combat arts. All paths of Shaolin knowledge accumulated in the previous 12 centuries of Shaolin martial arts came together in Shaolin “Chi Sim” Weng Chun Kung Fu.

Based on Ten Shaolin wisdoms, Seven Shaolin principles, Eighteen Shaolin bridge hands, heaven-man-earth structures and energetics, five hand forms, wooden dummy forms, and weapon forms. Weng Chun Kung Fu is well equipped to challenge the practitioner to a lifetime of continued development and self improvement. It is thought that the Weng Chun Kung Fu system is the roots of many Southern Chinese martial arts today.

Our Method of Teaching Kung Fu and Self Defence Classes in London

The distinguishing feature of the way we teach our Kung Fu classes in London is via our team teaching method. This distinctive system makes our classes very easy to follow for beginners and intermediate students. Our method of team teaching provides our students with a setting where the emphasis is on the clarity of the work. When two or more of our instructors collaborate in a single class, the students will have one instructor’s movements to follow while another instructor helps guide the class and follow up on specific needs of the group.

In Shaolin Weng Chun Kung Fu we train not only the beautiful historical forms from the Shaolin Temple but also applications which focus on self defence, health and physical condition.

Our Kung Fu and Self Defence Training Program

Beside physical training, such as, strength, speed, condition, good body coordination and flexibility, mental strengths are incorporated in our London Kung Fu school as well. We use empty hand and weapon forms to train body coordination and Chi Qong for mental strengths and focus.

Shaolin Weng Chun Kung Fu training will teach you to direct the force of an attack against the attacker, i.e. to ‘borrow’ the energy of the attacker, ‘charging up’ one’s own body and then effortlessly redirecting the energy back against its source. The Shaolin Weng Chun system is one of the very few self defence systems that prepare you for every phase of a fight, using feet, fists, elbows, and knees. Instead of retreating, a Shaolin Weng Chun student will advance and glue themselves to their opponent, rendering them unable to continue their attack. This proximity, combined with well-defined movements, will force the attacker into a helpless position.

Sanda and Kung Fu London

We teach conditioning and Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing) class every Monday. This is a class for students who want to gain fighting experience and improve their fitness level. Sanda/Sanshou (Chinese Kickboxing) is suitable for everyone regardless of age and fitness level. Your fitness and co-ordination will improve after a couple months training with us.

The history of Sanda stems from the beginning of Sung Dynasty in China whose first emperor Zhao Kuang Yin (Chiu Kuen Ying) 927~976 AD founded Ti Zu San Soo. With his background as Chou dynasty’s senior general, Zhao used sand bags to develop kicking and punching skills for his military warriors. His skills were based upon intense study of various traditional methods he learned from the Shaolin temple.

In previous centuries in China Sanda’s history involved barehanded combat in which no rules existed. However, as a competitive event becomes more popular Sanda developed into a combat sport.  The military use Sanda to test the soldiers’ arm-to-arm combat skills, strategies and fitness. Later, rules were developed and the use of protective gloves was adopted to reduce injuries. It was originally used by the Kuomintang (KMT) at the first modern military academy in Whampoa in the 1920s and was also adopted as a method by the People’s Liberation Army of China.

China introduced an amateur sport version of Sanda in 1991 and in 1997, and the first attempts were made both in China and in the United States to establish professional matches.  These matches are referred to as Sanshou a newer term, which the Chinese use to describe full combat fighting.

At the Shaolin Weng Chun Kung Fu Academy, our Sanda/Sanshou is composed of some aspects of Weng Chun Kung Fu. We incorporate the punching, kicking, striking, body movements, footwork, throwing, takedowns and grappling from Shaolin Weng Chun Kung Fu system.

In every Sanda/Sanshou classes we spend 30-45 minutes on crossfit training. This type of training was designed to improve the student’s cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, and balance. Our workouts are constantly varied, you will never do two days the same, two weeks the same or two months the same. This keeps things interesting and increases the impact of each workout as your body will not have conditioned itself to deal with the challenge.

Our conditioning training together with Sanda/Sanshou gives you maximum fitness for your time invested. All of our workouts are high intensity which means you don’t have to be working for hours to see amazing results. Our high intensity workouts combined with mobility work and Weng Chun Kung Fu will improve pretty much all of your health indicators.
